Who am I?
I'm a software engineer. I'm a husband and father. I'm a writer, creator, and inventor. I'm a thinker, feeler, and passionate philosopher. I'm a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. I'm a music lover. I'm a businessman. I'm a life-long learner.
My Background
Born (1999) and raised in Utah, I had moved 23 times in my first 23 years of life. When I was 9 years old I got an mp3 player and I downloaded all of Owl City's discography. Music quickly became an integral part of my life, helping me deal with complex emotions to navigate through life. I was exposed to music production at a young age and enjoyed playing Dance Dance Revolution. I took a Poetry class in Grade School and I remember receiving high praise for a poem I wrote. In middle school, my best friend showed me how I could change the appearance of my grades using developer tools in the browser. That inspired me to become a software engineer. At the start of high school, I was swept away by the musical, rap, and lyrical genius of Twenty One Pilots. In 10th Grade, I attended an International School called AISU, made my first Chinese friends, and started down a path of learning the Chinese language. In 11th grade, I transferred to Davis High School, joined the robotics club, and competed in the 2016 World's Vex Robotics Competition. I loved to challenge myself and took the hardest classes my well-funded 5A school had to offer (Davis High School) while simultaneously attending Davis Technical College at night to study Software Development. One of those classes was CE English. We wrote many 10-page papers, and that is when I remembered I had a talent for writing. After High School I met a Chinese girl online and traveled to China to meet up with her. After 1 month of spending almost every day together I asked her to be my girlfriend. That was the start of a 3-year long-distance relationship. When I got to college, one of the first classes I took was Philosophy. I excelled in that class and my Professor asked me to join the Philosophy club. I enjoyed reading and learning about philosophical concepts even though I hadn't enjoyed reading prior to that. When that professor transferred to Boston University I left Philosophy club to focus on becoming a software engineer. I worked several part-time jobs until I got married to that lovely Chinese girl. I started applying to full-time positions with the experience I already had. I was a General Manager at Papa Murphy's, Managed DNS/Email servers at a web development company, and built an inspections application for West Coast Code Consultants. The credit should go to my wife, as suddenly I got hired at an amazing tech company in Salt Lake City called OC Tanner, more than tripling my previous salary. I finally became a real software engineer, making that dream a reality. I felt blessed that I could support my family, but deep down I knew I was only getting started. With many business ideas, I bought domains left and right, churning out unfinished websites and half-written provisional patent specifications. I began to feel frustrated with my progress, went through a rough patch in my marriage, and slowly succumbed to feelings of depression. What went wrong? What can I learn through my experiences? What comes next? The purpose of this blog is to explore these very questions. I've stumbled upon a hobby of writing poetry, so that is what I will focus on for now as it is a creative outlet for my emotions with no rules or boundaries. In the future, I will write essays and share with readers my core philosophical beliefs. First I must come to a better understanding of myself to increase my capacities and live a life without regrets.
